Galerie BMG is pleased to present "Undertow", an exhibition of work by Philadelphia-based photographer, Rita Bernstein. These exquisite photographs are small and intimate, yet convey a strong mysterious and psychological narrative. As the title suggests, there is a tension, a sense of underlying danger or vulnerability associated with the subjects in each image.

According to the artist: "I chose a process and materials that were sympathetic to my intentions and my ideas. By brushing silver emulsion onto handmade paper, I am able to achieve a result that is tactile and sculptural. In both my images and my prints, I am courting the imperfect, the messy, the raw, and the vulnerable. The fragility of the paper and the unique blemishes and characteristics of the pictures reflect the flawed beauty and the humanity of my subjects".

Rita fell in love with photography more than twenty years ago and gave up a successful career as a civil rights lawyer to devote her time to creating photographic images. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections and has received funding and recognition from various arts centers, foundations, and publications.

All images are hand applied silver emulsion on Japanese gampi paper in editions of fifteen.
